Toll Gates in Dubai:-

Dubai is unique even in its Toll systems. Dubai has introduced a unique Toll system known as Salik(road toll)(meaning clear and moving )It’s a name given to electronic Toll System, which automatically deduces the fees when a vehicle passes the toll gate. The Salik toll was launched by Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on 1 July 2007.

It says a lot about the country when it takes some effective measures to save the precious time of its tourists and its citizens, Facilitating people to ease their journey and not to occupy them in time consuming hazards of waiting in Traffic Jam for the toll registration.

So far there are four toll gates near Al Garhoud Bridge, one near Mall of the Emirates on Sheikh Zayed Road, Maktoum Bridge and at Al Safa. While the later two were added in 2008.

Motorists are required to buy a 100 AED pre-paid card that is affixed to their windscreens. 4 AED ($1.08) is deducted from their account each time they pass through a toll gate.

Technology used in Salik:-

Salik RDID Tags are passive tags powered by transceiver in the toll gates. Radio frequency identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders.

A Salik RFID tag is an object that can be applied to or incorporated into a product, animal, or person for the purpose of identification using radio waves.

Dubai is constantly on the run, advancing its Road, Rail, Air infrastructure competing with well developed countries. It has been predicted that after Dubai Expo 2020, Dubai will see a huge rise in its advancement of infrastructure and technology.

Advantages of Salik Technology:-

Salik system has a stunning benefit from saving time of the tourists to clearing and moving of the traffic. As the vehicles with their owners don’t have to stop by and pay the toll charge. The Salik RFID Tags enables the automatic detection and reduction of the concerned charges. There has been constructive criticism surrounding the Salik system, but one can’t deny the usual benefits of the technology in use since 2007.

Abu Dhabi saw the opening of Toll Gates in October 2019:-

It has been quite a surprise that Abu Dhabi followed the suit quite late, which was on 15th October 2019, 12 years after the Salik Toll Gates(RFID Tags) were installed in 2007 at Dubai. Unlike Dubai Salik Toll Gate system, Abu Dhabi toll gates won’t be having RFID Tags, whereas vehicle owners will pay the charge with online E-payment system. All the vehicles under registered Abu Dhabi are automatically registered in the E-wallet system, whereas the non Abu Dhabi vehicle owners have to register themselves under a separate online portal.

Four Toll gates have been installed in Abu Dhabi. Motorists have to pay Dh4 to drive through them during the peak hours between Saturday and Thursday. During non-peak hours, and on Fridays and public holidays, the toll will be reduced to Dh2 for every pass.
